Who Can Claim?
You can claim if your employer requires you to work from home — not just offers it as an option. If you choose to work from home when you could go to the office, you typically can't claim. However, if there's no office space available for you or your contract specifies home working, you can claim.
Flat Rate vs Actual Expenses
The flat rate of £6/week is simple to claim and doesn't need receipts. If your actual work-related expenses (electricity, heating, internet) exceed £312/year, you can claim actual expenses instead — but you'll need to keep records and may need Self Assessment.
How to Claim
For the flat rate, use HMRC's online tool at gov.uk — no Self Assessment needed. The relief is applied through your tax code, so you'll pay less tax each month. For actual expenses or to claim multiple years, you may need to file a Self Assessment return.
Other Allowable Expenses
Beyond home working, you may also claim for professional subscriptions, uniform maintenance, and tools required for your job. Use our tax refund calculator to check all potential claims.
