High Income Child Benefit Charge Thresholds
Avoiding HICBC with Pension Contributions
Pension contributions reduce your "adjusted net income" for HICBC purposes. If you earn £65,000, contributing £5,000 to your pension would bring you under the threshold, saving the HICBC charge plus getting 40% tax relief on the contribution. Use our pension calculator to see the full benefit.
Why You Should Still Claim
Even if you earn over £80,000, claiming Child Benefit has important benefits: the claiming parent gets National Insurance credits towards their State Pension, and your child automatically receives their National Insurance number at 16. You can claim but opt out of receiving payments.
Paying the HICBC
If you're liable for HICBC, you must register for Self Assessment and declare the charge on your tax return. HMRC can also collect it through your tax code if you prefer to spread payments throughout the year.
